CENTRE FOR SPEED CROWNS 2012 CHAMPIONS

Aug 25, 2012

Shediac, NB - CFS ended its points championship season for grass roots racing here tonight with a full card of racing and family activities during the MacDonald Buick Kids Gold Rush night. Two touring divisions and three weekly divisions filled the card. There was also a fun race for the kids called the "Gold Rush", and a chance for the stock car "Mechanics" to give the wheel a try in the Mechanics Race.

In the touring divisions the AOW put on a competitive show of side by side racing with Joe Hoyt talking wins in the heat, semi and feature but at the end of the day it was Mike Raeburn hanging on to take the overall points title for the series. Raeburn, of Hampton, finished second in the feature followed the 75 of Doug Matchett from Saint John. Winners in the Mini Cups were the 29 of James Matchett in the Heat and Feature followed by the 11 Leolin Bordage of St Leolin and 24 Derek Goodwin of Renous. Newcomer Don Gaudet produced a few anxious moments when he barrell rolled his new Mini Cup car during early action but the driver emerged uninjured.

In the weekly divisions the winner of Late Model Sportsman feature for his first ever points championship at the speedway was Riverviews Craig "The Thrill Maker" Ward in the 02 car. Ward edged out Rookie of the Year winner the "Canadian Outlaw" Shawn Conners (Grandson to Calib Dunn) and hometown favorite Claude Gaudet who tied for second behind Ward. That was also the finishing order on the podium for the night. Gaudet won the heat and Ward won the Dash. In Street Stocks it was `Mighty` Brad MacLean in his lucky number 13 out of the Miramichi who took the championship home for the division and also won the feature followed by Dangerous Don Marcoux of St. Charles and newcomer Geoff Tugwell of Smithstown. Rookie of the Year for the division was Justin MacDonald of Springhill who also finished second in the points overall. Finally in the racing highlight of the night the Mini Stocks put on an entertaining and exciting show with a host of lead changes and close side by side racing for the duration of their feature which saw 15 cars compete including Halifax`s (99) Dave Matthews who emerged victorious ahead of local favorite Michel Brun (23) and team mate Kyle MacMillian (5) also of Halifax. Brad Daley (66) emerged with the championship however followed by John Baker from Springhill, NS in the 89 and Don Gaudet (88) of Summerside, PEI.

In the novelty event of the night after a few spins and turmoil it was Brad MacLean in the 88 of Don Gaudet with Jamie Brightman (181) and Lawrence Turcott (13) who rounded out the podium.  The event run time was 3 hours and ten minutes.

CFS is off for the next 2 weeks preparing for Atlantic Speed Weeks which will begin a little early this year with the running of a couple of rained out extended race events in the "Metalcore Maritime Super Series of Racing" on Sept 15 then move on the D.R. Scrap Atlantic Monster Nationals and Demolition Championships on Sept 22 and 23, Canadian Drifting Championsips - including Drift Clinics by the Pro and a Car Show on Sept 29th and the finale of the Atl Stock Car Championships on Oct long weekend.
