Ripping off the fans
« on: July 20, 2008, 09:51:28 AM »
OK, I have to vent.  First of all, I have been a Sunset supporter for many years.  My wifes family raced there for 25 years, and the turn 3 & 4 grandstand is perfect for me and my 5 year old son to watch the races.  However last night was probably the end of my support for the track.  I am waiting in line for about 5 minutes, not a big deal.  Then as I get closer to the booth, I see a piece of paper posted "special show, $17 entry fee".  Can someone please explain to me what is special about the following:

4 Funs
4 Cyl roadrunners
50 lap LM feature
$1000 to win King of the Hill

I have no problem with paying the extra 3 bucks (or more) for special shows such as the Super Late Models, but to pull out the best class at the track (Thunder Cars), and replace it with some extra late model laps and a KOTH is brutal.  Needless to say I turned around and went home.  Am I going to spend more money for the rest of the summer travelling to Barrie, Varney, Mosport, Kawartha, Delaware and Merritville?  Sure I am, but as a long time supporter of the track, I will not be screwed over by having to pay more money for less racing.

IMO the mid season races are a part of the year, not a special event.  There were less laps turned last night than on a 'regular' night with the absence of the Thunders.  I guess we should expect to pay an increased entrance fee for the first and last regular race of the year too? LOL  I'm not impressed.  I consider the KOTH to be along the lines of the bus races, jalopy races etc ... they may be interesting to watch, but they are by no stretch RACING!  I feel your pain.  Too bad, Sunset has been my preference for years, but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I think its terrible and I believe just a guess...that the 1000.00 Spectator Race is the cause of this inflation. I have been going to Sunset for many years now and I have only paid 17.00 for when OSSCAAR is there. I think its a shame that unfortunately for Track owners at both BSW and SUNSET they can't seem to COMPREHEND that ITS THE FANS THAT PAY THEIR BILLS AND ITS THE DRIVERS WHO PUT ON THEIR SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!. Would Wes Good or the Owners get on the track and race? Would people come to see it? Probably not...THAT would not be a show...So WHY would anyone pay more for  watching people take their own car on the track and winning 1000.00?
Seems to me ultimately what happened lastnight IS it wasn't SUNSET SPEEDWAY that paid the purse of the Spectator Race IT WAS THE FANS?????
NOT RIGHT!!!! I don't agree with it BAD MOVE FOR BUSINESS WES!

Business lessons

1. DO NOT EXPLIOT THE CUSTOMER BASE YOU HAVE THEY CHOOSE TO GO TO YOUR BUSINESS AND YOU SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR THAT EVERY WEEK.
2. KEEP YOUR EMPLOYEES HAPPY OR IN THIS CASE THE DRIVERS...THEY REPRESENT YOUR BUSINESS AND THE FIRST CONTACT THEY HAVE WITH THE CUSTOMERS.
3. DO NOT OVER CHARGE FOR LESS SERVICE THAN WHAT IS NORMALLY EXPECTED AND DO NOT OVERCHARGE FOR SERVICE THAT IS NORMALLY EXPECTED.
4. BE FAIR AND DECISIVE DON'T CHANGE THE RULES TO SUIT YOURSELF.
5. TRY TO EXCEED THE CUSTOMERS EXPECTATIONS AT EVERY CHANCE YOU GET..FOR EVERY PERSON YOU KEEP HAPPY THEY TELL PEOPLE AND THEY TELL PEOPLE AND SO ON IMPROVING YOUR BOTTOM LINE....MAKING MONEY.

JUST SOME FRIENDLY ADVICE

It really is a shame that they did this.  Now they've succeeded in pissing off the fans to go along with the earlier accomplishments of alienating the staff and drivers.  There won't be many people left.

Plus people remember this sort of crap, especially new visitors.  You get screwed once at a place and you won't go back.  Ever get screwed at a restaurant drive-thru and vow never to go back?

I go to Sunset every weekend and I don't like paying more money than anyone else does...but you have to admit that last nights crowd was the largest crowd I have seen on hand for a regular night of racing so far this year....as far as the spectator races go, there was definitely a huge cheer from the crowd when Spencer asked them if they wanted the Subaru to win...so my guess is that most fans enjoyed this event...

I don't doubt that they enjoyed the event I know myself when I am there I have an awesome time...What I don't think is right is charging more for less. That is the problem.
People like myself who attend Sunset know what happens on a usual night and when something like that happens as a fan and regular you have to ask yourself WHY? I am glad to hear that the crowds are increasing that is great. however just because the crowds are increasing shouldn't mean that you charge more that is my point...

seems to be a trend I see at other tracks too. My favourite, Merrittville in Thorold, has some wierd pricing policies that I can't explain. Perhaps it's because their regular shows are so reasonable at $10.00 adult, their special event pricing seems suspect. A week ago (although it was rained out) was the Jerry Winger 50 lap for 358 modifieds. Admission was $15.00 for 15 more laps than the mods normally run at a weekly showl!!!-also a handful of vintage cars would be present and they run for trophys.  Earlier in the season, the Patriot Sprint car group was to attend (this show also rained out). Admission was to be $18.00 and the mods had the night off, so there was no mod purse to payout. The Patriot Purse is $1000 more total than the weekly mod purse and the admission jumps by 80%!!!!
They also had a Lucas Sportsman Tour 50 lapper earlier in the season at $15.00 admission. The sportsman ran for twice the normal distance but the winner got $750 instead of the usual $500. Something is not adding up. Twice the laps for only a 50% purse increase.

re the Merrittville pricing-I posted on the tracks board in a very polite way questing the pricing policy and no reply. I also posted on Dirt Track Digest and perhaps as the track is an advertiser on the site, I can't find the posting any longer.
Flamboro's pricing which is basically one price for any show except Octoberfest must be baffling for new fans when the quality & divisions of the show can vary from week to week at the same price. (but there the back gate drives everything and any spectator admissions are just gravy)JMO
Most dirt tracks are very reasonable. I was amazed with the SOS show at Humberstone a few weeks ago. Regular show plus 27 sprint cars for $12.00 ($2.00 more than normal). If you attend a bunch of different tracks, the pricing policys definitely leave you scratching your head.

Maybe it was a $3.00 admission hike to pay for the stretch limo for our national anthem singer from Beeton  ??   Maybe we paid for the extra sheets of plywood I saw for new billboard signs or extra paint to clean the place up ? But seriously , Wes needs to keep all the drivers , teams and fans happy . It's an even harder goal to fill the grandstands when we feel ripped off ! With escalating fuel prices , groceries and everything else , I recall what its like to make show up each week with a Family . I hope Wes knows how to keep the grass cut and just spruce the place up to what it once looked like .

Don't get me wrong. I don't mind paying an increase for more show. I have a problem paying for less show than a regular night. Lastnight my opinion is It should have been 14 not 17.
