410 Non-Wing Sprints Take Center Stage at Plymouth Speedway

(Plymouth, IN) The weather finally cooperated to help produce a great night of racing Saturday night at Plymouth Speedway where six features took to the short dirt track.
Dylan Woodling found his way to the top of the running order on Saturday as he was able to get ahead of dominant cars in the Dickies Restaurant 600 Sprints feature. Woodling was able to slip by Garrett Saunders and Eric Saunders who had been running out front for most of the 20-lap feature. The Saunders pair tangled in turn one with only a few laps to go along with Joshua James whose sprint toppled on its roof. No drivers were injured. Woodling was able to continue on to win the race with Nick Yoder in second and Bud McCune in third.
“It’s awesome to be up here,” smiled Woodling. “Passing was good tonight and it turned out to be the best for me.”
The 410 Non-Wing Sprint feature, presented by The Car Company in Warsaw and Team VW Audi in Merrillville, Indiana, was a quick 30-lap feature. The No. 23 driven by Tyler Courtney was the class of the field. He led all of the laps in the race. Tyler Hewitt fought through traffic to get from ninth to second in the race. Shane Cottle could see the lead during the midway point of the race, but couldn’t get around Courtney for the lead. Cottle then dropped to third after Hewitt found his way by him.
“We’ve been pretty fast the last couple of nights. We got lucky tonight,” said Courtney.
Jamie Lomax had a handle on the Swan Lake Resort UMP Modifieds race on Saturday. He quickly found the lead and stayed in that spot throughout the contest. He had a 3.9 second lead before the first caution flag on lap nine. Bobby Stremme was in the second spot until a charging Zeke McKenzie found himself in Stremme’s rear view mirror. McKenzie and Stremme battled for position for several laps. Stremme was able to keep McKenzie behind him even after a late-race caution. Lomax was the winner with Stremme in second and McKenzie in third.
“The track was great tonight. It was smooth and just a great race,” stated Lomax in his post-race interview.
Bryce Shidler returned to competition in the Walmart Thunder Stock division at the Playground of Power Saturday night. The 2014 champion worked his way through traffic to grab the lead early, but a mid-race penalty would set Shilder back two positions out of the lead. He would regain the lead only a few laps later. Keith Crissinger worked his way from ninth into the second position by lap 13 which gave him another podium spot on the season. Jim Henson held his own in the third position and claimed another top three finish.
“We decided we were going to pull out the car out of the shed and go racing. We made that decision this afternoon. We hadn’t worked on it all year, but we were able to get the win,” laughed Shidler.
David Short claimed another win in the WTCA Super Streets after battling Roger Duszynski for several laps for the top podium spot. Short had been stalking Duszynski since the drop of the green flag and the pair were side-by-side by lap seven. Duszynski ran high out of turn four on lap nine and Short was able to sneak by for the lead. Duszynski finished in the second spot while Dave Fritz watched all of the action from the third place position.
“Picking up the feature win is great, especially with only a couple of races left in the season,” commented Short.
Aaron Day started near the rear of the field in the Bane-Welker Cyber Stocks feature and ended up with the first place trophy after 20 laps in the final feature of the night at Plymouth Speedway. He made it up to third by lap three and was in the lead on the next lap. Loren Swanson was next to last in the starting order but battled his way through traffic to claim the second spot. Carson Day grabbed the third podium spot after falling a position to Swanson in the last part of the race.
“It was a nice, smooth track. It was slick, but it was great.” said Aaron Day.
Racing continues on Saturday, Aug. 8 with the USAC Honda Performance Development Midget Show along with a regular lineup of features. Kids will also have another chance to win bicycles during a break in the racing action. Gates open at 4 p.m., hot laps begin at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. ET.
