A whole track full of those Vegas would look neat. Those cars could run on the new Grand Bend track.

I still think there has to be some room around here for the small 4 cylinder cars. Brad might have better luck getting a bunch of them to travel to the Bend. 4 cylinders, front wheel drive, a roll cage and teenage bravado.....gotta be a good show.

Are lot of the racers mentioned above still around? What would it take to get them together again..
Or is that what the beer patio at Delaware Speedway is for.

FYI, those vegas had the 302 chevy V8 and they also ran Pintos , Mavericks , Gremlins (all V8's) and I even have a pic of an AMC Hornet !!! They were called the Compact class and I believe they replaced the Hobby cars (coupes) when they were started. Oh ya they also ran 10 inch slicks. I think they are running a 4 cyl class at Grand Bend this season !

Yep. In 1974 or so, the promoter at the time decided that compact cars were more identifiable to fans than the coupes, and offered an X dollar bonus to anyone who won an Amateur Sportsman (hobby) feature with a "current" compact body on it. It was a phase-in that took only a year or so. Then they started calling them Compacts.

During that phase in period, a lot of hobby races looked like this. (The 18 car is George Jelfs. If I recall correctly, his car had been almost the spitting image of the 6 car before he put the Vega body on it.)

More from the Brooks Collection. Quotes are from Gary.

Here's a few of me.

The white monte was the first night of the season and belonged to Steve Henderson.

The big monte you might remember.

Yep. Nilestown 1974. (Note the 1974 version of the Safe-R Barrier.) I'd guess they're coming out of turn 4 here.

That'd probably be the same year as your other photo.

How old is Dave Silverthorne??

Maybe YOU should ask him.  ;D

How big do you think I am?

He's a big boy now, I can't imagine what he was like in 71.

Great topic guys. I am a collector of Jr. Hanley memorabilia. Photos, shirts, programs, anything I can get. Have thousands of old and recent pics of him. Always looking for more. Anyone have any pics of him from Delaware. Any old SLM pics from the late 70's through the 90's would be amazing to put on here.
Looking for mostly Hanley though. Biederman and guys from Windsor like Monaghan, Mallot, Merrfield, etc. that also ran up there.
If anyone can help me out with my Hanley collection, photos especially, I would really appreciate it.
THANKS,
Ron
