Andrew Gresel Settles For Eighth-Place Finish With APC Series At The Beach

SAUBLE BEACH, Ont. – August 3, 2016 – Andrew Gresel earned an eighth-place finish in the APC United Late Model Series Spira 100 at Sauble Speedway last Saturday night. The top-10 result helped Gresel retain the points lead, but is a bit of a disappointment for the Sauble Beach, Ont. native who had been running second with eight laps to go at his home track.

“We were running second for most of the race. We got inside Brandon Watson for the lead late. Our car was better on the restarts and his was better on the long runs,” Gresel explained. “The next corner, he drove in to the back of the car. He hit me twice and we were able to save it.”

The contact stacked up the field and brought out a yellow flag. On the following restart, Gresel was hit from behind again, sending the CUSW No.81 spinning. Contact following the spin caused heavy damage to the left front. After a demotion to the rear of the field, Gresel limped the car to an eighth place finish.

“That’s all we could do. We picked up a few spots,” Gresel commented disappointedly. “Getting spun out with eight laps to go obviously sucked. We would have finished second, no problem, or maybe even won it.”

Gresel and his Sauble Falls Racing team did take positives away from the race with a much smoother weekend than their previous stop at Sauble. During the July date at the Beach, Gresel fought transmission issues. Mechanical problems were not a worry this weekend although he did face other obstacles.

“We were fighting the car. We went out Friday and everything was great, but on race day the track changed quite a bit. We made a bunch of adjustments and changed a couple of springs,” Gresel said. “We got it better and qualified fifth, but we still couldn’t get all the bugs worked out for the race.”

Gresel continued: “Usually that track doesn’t change that much. You couldn’t really run the bottom line. You had to run the middle line.”

The eighth-place finish continues Gresel’s streak of eight consecutive top-10 finishes so far this. He’s eager to make the necessary repairs and return to action for the second round of Delaware Speedway’s Late Model Triple Crown on Friday, August 5.

“The car’s beat up pretty bad, but I have to get it fixed up. We won the first Triple Crown race, so we don’t want to give up on that. A lot of our sponsors are down there, so we want to be there for them. We’ve been good there,” said Gresel, who has won all three starts he has made at the London-area oval this season.
