Do you guys think the powerglide is worth the 50lb weight penalty??

What seems to be the weak link with the slip slide powerglide?Seems like alot of guys who run this 40 year old trans, have failures....Are you running them in 1st,or 2nd?
-
Are these transmissions what we used to call a "Mexican Two Speed"? I know a lot of guys swore by them years ago.

The casting is thin right at the back of the case where all the reverse stuff is. We had one that was fine in park and all the forward gears but if you put in reverse it would puke its guts out.

I think Larry's question was about the weakest area of the transmission. I tried to answer that to the best of my ability, from my experience with those units. We have had a few failures...
I don't think anyone should put a 40 year old transmission in a race car without having a look to see what's in there, but that's just me... Maybe some people might...

The powerglide reverse issue comes from the pressure being to high when shifted into reverse. I was told like of the car was stuck and it was shifted into reverse at high RPM. Of all the glides I messed with only one was blown like this. The thing to do is to keep the band adjusted properly if using it in first gear. It's easy to do and doesn,t take long
