Sky Financial Series – Saskatchewan Foster Families 150

Question:  What happens when two of the front leaders of a race get
tangled up going through a corner under a full moon?

Answer:  You wipe out half the field.

Such was the case Saturday night at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway during
the Sky Financial Super Late Model Series Saskatchewan Foster Families
150.  It was lap 120, the 56 of Howard Crossman had just lost the lead
to the 55 of Jim Gaunt.  Crossman was running side by side with the 8 of
Kelly Admiraal.  Gaunt was keeping his car wide to hold back the two
contenders.  Eleven more cars were behind them, still bunched up from a
recent restart.

Howie and Kelly go hard into corner one, coming out hard and sliding
into corner two.  Howie’s car slips, making contact with Kelly.  The
both go around and eight more cars can’t stop.  It’s a train wreck as
Tim Kammer in the 04 launches over top of Admiraal.  62, 12, 04 and 97
are all collected, suffering various amounts of damage.

The race started out well enough with the 62 of Kenny Heintz starting
from the pole position.  With a great start, Kenny pulled out into the
lead, being chased by Scott Lucas, who took over the lead in the #27 car
in lap 12.  The first caution came out in lap 24 after an innocent spin
by the #22 of Doug Bienia.

Lucas continued to lead through cautions in lap 39 (#24 spin), lap 60
(#44 caught on fire) and lap 69 when the #17 spun out.  Side by side
coming to green, Jim Gaunt in the #55 edged ahead and had the lead as
they came around to put lap 70 into the books.

The drivers settled in with Gaunt showing them the preferred groove all
the way until lap 99.  Two cars spun out in two separate places on the
track.  The 76 in corner four and the 88 in corner two.

Officials were getting reports of oil on the track.  The track was
checked, but nothing was found.  The cars were sent back to racing.  55,
who was leading before the caution chose to take the outside on the
front row (perhaps he was suspect of oil down low?), letting Crossman
and the #56 take over pole position.  The 55 led lap 100, but it was 56
in the lead for lap 101.

Three laps later another spin in corner four brought the track under
yellow again.  On the restart the 88 spun his tires, causing the 51 and
99 to spin coming out of four.  Slippery track was definitely becoming
suspect.  Several cars had oil on them, but we couldn’t see who was
leaking.  Everyone in the facility could smell burning gear oil (sign of
a differential leak), but which car.

The #12 of Aaron Deagnon was brought in for a mechanical consult and
cleared, then the #88.  Both were given their spots back.  Finally all
the cars were brought down pit lane to be checked, windshields cleaned
(there was that much oil) and water to the drivers.  Officials found
both the #04 of Tim Kammer and the #76 of Dusty O’Connell to be leaking
gear oil, so were sent to their pits for repairs.  The 76 did not return
to the race.  The #04 probably wishes he didn’t return to the race as he
took the worst of the damage in the crash a few laps later.

Gaunt took over the lead on the green flag and continued to lead until
the fireworks in lap 117 when “the big one happened”, started by
Crossman with Admiraal.  While the cleanup was taking place, racers were
informed we had hit the 1.25 hour time limit so the race would be
dropped from the 33 laps remaining to 25 laps when we went back to green.

Gaunt grabbed the lead going back green, a lead he didn’t relinquish
through another caution in lap 120, then to the end of the race.  With
the checkered flag coming out at lap 142 in the time shortened race, it
was Jim Gaunt in the #55 Sky Financial Monte Carlo SS picking up the
checkered flag and $1850 payday.  Scott Lucas (in his second ever SLM
race) went home with second place in the #27 OK Tire Racing Chevrolet
and the #99 Big Bore Drilling Batmobile of Dean Braham in third.

After presentations to the drivers by the Saskatchewan Foster Families
Association, it was on to the Golf’s Car Wash Mini Stock Feature.

The mini stocks showed they too are affected by the full moon as we saw
bad move after bad move right through the race.  They got through half
the race without incident, then it was caution after caution.  Finally
after having gained only two more laps and four cautions, the checkered
flag came out ending this race with Jamie Tataryn in the lead in the #41
Streetwise Service Neon, followed by the #11 Works Engineering Tiburon
driven by Jason Venne and Carlee Davidson bringing up third in the #95
Lightning McQueen Neon.

The Law Enforcement Guardians Bandoleros put on one heck of a feature
race, the only one that was caution free.  In the end it was Tyler Emond
capping off a perfect night, capturing the feature flag in the #18,
after winning both Bandolero heat races.  #22 of Kelsey Toth was second
and rookie Megan Preston was third in the #21 Total Signage Bandolero.

The final race of the night was the Sask Earthworks Legends feature.
While it wasn’t caution filled (two cautions), there was some tempers
flaring as the top cars fight for year end championship points.  End of
the day it was Blake Erb taking the win in the #21 Novakoski Quality
Collision Ford coupe.  Danny Meier was second in the #90 Iron Horse
Energy Ford Coupe and the #84 Norm’s Interiors Ford of AJ Morrison was
third.

Next racing action is Friday night as we pick up last week’s rained out
card.  The WSSL Super Late Models are back, the Tiger Automotive Pro
Trucks and the Golf’s Car Wash Street Stocks will be competing for the
Rick Fredrickson Memorial trophy.  Racing is Friday, September 4, with
the gates open at 6:00 and the first green flag at 7:05.  What better
way to end a first week back in school than with a night out at the races.
