Sportsman Race For The Cure 100

There was just all around good racing Saturday night at the Wyant Group
Raceway.  Whether it was the Golf’s Car Wash Mini Stocks, the Run Your
Junk cars or the Shell V-Power Sportsman, race fans saw hard clean and
fast racing.

It took some juggling of the schedule to get the complete race program
in as rain was teasing drivers, making the track slippery, and the Run
Your Junk cars were the perfect entertainment and track dryers.

The Shell V-Power Sportsman Race For The Cure 100 was rained out a
couple of weeks ago, so the race teams were particularly determined to
get the race in Saturday.  Drivers were all introduced and were
strapping in when drops started appearing on their windshields.

The cars started to pace and the drizzle just wouldn’t let up. After a
number of laps pacing, it was decided to change up the schedule and
bring out the Run Your Junk cars to keep the heat in the track.

Run Your Junk cars are cars that could have been on the street last
week.  The interiors are stripped out, a roll-over bar is added along
with some beefing up of the doors.  Crashing, banging, head-on
collisions were all part of the order through the 25 laps.  At the end
of the race Nick Lucki was given the checkered flag.

The rain had stopped, the cars held the track and after a little clean
up we could finally get the Race For The Cure 100 under way.

The #27 of Rick Schurmans led the field from the green flag before being
overtaken by the #36 of Kevin Dyck in lap 11.  Dyck was leading when the
first caution flew in lap 16.  Caution laps were counted for the first
75 laps of the race, so we were on lap 24 when the green flag dropped
again and the #93 of Neil Schneider got the jump and the lead.

Dyck wasn’t letting up though and it was side by side racing, with Dyck
finally sliding the #36 in front of Schneider for lap 34.  Kevin Dyck
would continue to lead until caution came out again in lap 56.  When the
green came out this time it was the #28 of Dan Shirley that took the
lead for lap 64.

It was a lead Dan would not relinquish through two more cautions at laps
77 and 81.  Ryan Thompson looked like he was gaining momentum, but could
get no further than Dan’s back bumper.

At the finish line it was Dan Shirley first in the Lucky Bastard
Distillers #28 Pontiac Grand Prix.  Ryan Thompson, driving the #33
Cynertia Electric and Control Inc. Camaro SS was second and Ben Busch
piloting the #49 Northern Lights Casino Monte Carlo filled out the podium.

In other racing action, as already mentioned, Nick Lucki took the Run
Your Junk Wrecker’s Challenge, followed by Travis Klotz and Taylor Derdall.

Craig Katelnikoff had a perfect night in the Golf’s Car Wash Street
Stocks winning the heat, qualifier and feature in the #3 BDI Canada
Firebird.  Scott Barrand looked like he was going to be a challenge in
the feature, but the #1 Tailgatorz Sports Bar Camaro settled for second,
followed by Curtis Houben in the #81 RPM Camaro.

In the Golf’s Car Wash Mini Stocks, Jim Barnsley’s dominance seems to
have come to an end.  While his #41 Streetwise Service Neon picked up
the heat win, Cole Nixey’s #23 33rd Street Automotive Acura Integra took
the qualifier.

Shawn Magee took the checkers in the feature in his #4 Streetwise
Service Honda Prelude, with Jim Barnsley close behind.  Cole Nixey was
third.

Local racers receive another week off as the Wyant Group Raceway is once
again transformed.  This time it’s monster truck action as the Market
Tire Monsters and Mayhem show hits Saskatoon next weekend.  Shows are
Friday July 15 at 7:00pm and Saturday July 16 at 1:00pm.  Advance
tickets are available at the four Market Tire locations in Saskatoon.

Stock car racing action is back in full swing with the Rick Fredrickson
street stock memorial on Saturday July 23, the SLM Bryce Mann memorial
July 26 and the NASCAR Pinty’s Series Bayer Crop Science Velocity
Prairie Thunder 250 on July 27.  That’s a full race week that will see
every division at Wyant Group Raceway hitting the track.
