Mikey fined at Daytona
« on: February 14, 2007, 06:44:43 PM »
Michael Waltrip Racing has been fined 100 driver points and 100 owners points for a foreign substance found in his intake manifold. It was not jet fuel as earlier rumoured. Is racewoman still in Ontario ? Just wondering if she's down in Daytona and accidentally got some of her peroxide in Mikey's intake. lol

What exactally was the violation?  The crew chief also got fined $100,000 and a suspension.  Must have been somthing.  I'm curious as to what exactally the violations were in greater detail than "actions detrimental to stock car racing"... :o

The violation was the addition of an octane boosting substance (haven't heard exactly what it was) which is apparently in the Nascar rulebook(pamphlet). I was listening to Sirius all day and there was a lot of speculation but no hard facts.

I heard that Nascar hadn't identified what it was just that it didn't appear to be oil.  I cna't beleive that Toyota would have issued a statement claiming it could be some sealant they should just try to keep out of the way of the debris until the  mystery substance is identified.

How about this:

Oxygenated gel for improving performance of combustion engines through improved burning of combustibles
United States Patent 6152121

A system and method for improving performance and fuel efficiency of a combustion engine by providing an oxygen enriched gel which is inserted near an air intake, where the gel is stored within a container formed from a gas permeable membrane which is sufficiently porous so as to enable the gel to gradually evaporate. The evaporating gel releases oxygen, which is drawn into the air intake, resulting in reduced emissions and improved performance of the engine. No modifications to the combustion engine are required to use the system. The gel is inexpensive, and the gel container is preferably replaced or refilled approximately as often as an oil change is performed.

At first there was a rumour that it was gelled jet fuel. Jet fuel is very close to kerosene/diesel and would not help. Have you ever put diesel in your car by mistake? it doesn't help at all.

If they were to coat the inside runners with this oxygenated gel it would eventually evaporate and not leave anything behind for Tech to find.

Just a guess.

early word on the street was that it was a gel like substance known as Sterno ... which allows for a much hotter, cleaner burn inside the engine

How long would that take to burn off? Would it be of any benefit on a shorter run like a qualifier?

WHERE DO I FIND IT ha ha   But seriously, once everyone knows what this substance is every racing sanctioning body is going to have to deal with it.

I think that was the idea, extra power for a short time to bring his times up. It should have evaporated long before Tech, but maybe the colder ambient air temps slowed the evaporation up a bit.

Sterno is a fuel, the restrictor plates choke off the amount of air getting in, there is enough fuel available, its the air they need, hence the oxygenates they try to put in the fuel, or NOS (Nitrous Oxide NO3) or in this case as a gel in the intake. Sterno is alcohol based (Methanol) and has less heat value than gas, it evaporates much slower than gas, my guess is that sterno would dilute the air fuel ratio and slow them down.

Again this is all supposition as they haven't released what it was yet.

rumour was that it was teriyaki sauce. (Whole team should have been given the boot or Mikey could have done us a favour and committed hari-kiri on national tv so we don't have have to listen to his bi-polar personality)
