Sunset Speedway, Barrie
« on: July 31, 2013, 03:12:53 PM »
I've been invited to have my Superbird pace some laps at the track on Sat Aug 10th (weather permitting). My Superbird used to be the Pace Car back in 1971 and 1972 at this track, so it will be back pacing laps 42 years later.  http://sunsetspeedway.ca/

I've confirmed with the track that other winged cars are welcome and since it is fan appreciation night- all of us can bring our cars onto the track. The fans can come down onto the track to look at the race cars plus the winged cars.
The front gates open at 5PM and we are to park in the parking lot right near the ticket booth.
We will be staying at the Holiday Inn and Conference Centre in Barrie http://www.hibarrie.ca/barrie-hotels/

Hopefully some of the wing car owners can join me at the track.
Jim

Ernie

I'll post a link to some photos in photo bucket. Hopefully it will work OK.

You wouldn't happen to have any old photos of the car when you were a wee tyke??? or know someone who has some??  I only have this one from Glenn Shakell from 1971.

This is the car as it was painted in 1972 with Labatts logos. It was a Labatts gold color. The car was then sold in late '72 or 73.

Glen would be the guy with any pictures. My Uncle may have some but he doesn't have many pictures left from back then. My avatar pic is his car from Sunset in '68. I think the Barrie Examiner had a few pictures when they did an article a few years ago about this car (I think it was the Examiner).

You have done a great job.  ;D Congratulations on getting the restoration done. Does Glen know you will be bringing it to Sunset?

When did you get The King to sign the breather?

Yes, Glenn has been contacted. Thanks for the tip about a newspaper article. I'll contact the Examiner today.
I sent my air cleaner cover to Richard's place in SC a few years ago to have him autograph it.

Thanks!
I spent 12 years on the restoration in total time, but definitely not full time. Lot of time trying to find parts. I debated for a while about returning it to how it looked as it came off the assembly line vs the Pace Car. Finally decided on the original pace car after I found out all the history.
It was Nate Salter who was a great help in finding the history since he remembered the car. It was sad to hear that he recently passed away. I had hoped he could see it at Sunset again. He is in the tower in the original photo.

You got it!!  I never noticed it when I got the photo originally from Glen Shakell. Only spotted it when  we started working with JD Graphics in WAterloo to design the decals to duplicate what was on the pace car. They wanted to correct the mistake - but I said no - I wanted the decal lettering to be axactly like the original!!
