Richlock Rentals Presents the Roy Smith Memorial



This Saturday Night Richlock Rentals presents the Roy Smith Memorial Race for the WILROC Non Wing Sprint Cars at Western Speedway’s fast 4/10ths mile paved oval.  The Island Series Stock Cars as well as the Old Time Racers and Island Dwarf Cars will also be in action.



The Roy Smith Memorial is in honor one of the Canada’s greatest race car drivers, Smith died in a fishing boat accident in February 2004.  In a career that started in the 60’s and ended in the 90’s, the Victorian born Smith won almost every major Super Modified and NASCAR Winston West events on the West Coast along with many other open competition events.  Highlighting his career was winning the NASCAR Winston West Crown four times, finishing 10th in the 1982 Daytona 500 and winning the 1973 Sprint Car/Super Modified International Drivers Challenge. 



In the WILROC Non Wing Sprint Car division, former WILROC Winged Champion Jeff Bird from Shawnigan Lake leads the point standings with 743 points on the strength of two wins, Sidney driver Chris Root who also has two wins sits in second position with 670 points. Victoria’s Paul Verhagen holds down the third spot, only 18 points behind Root at 652.  Verhagen is followed by early points leader and winner of the first two main events Campbell River’s Mark Stewart, Stewart has 542 points, 28 more than  Ron French who has 514 points.



Cody Aumen from Duncan is back atop of the Island Series Stock Cars Series after his third win of the year at the last event on August 11th,  Aumen has a 16 point lead 883 to 867 over Kyle Cottam,  Dave Reside is 64 points behind Cottam with 803.  Third generation Rookie driver Brandon Steen sits fourth with 791 points, Steen is coming off a big win at the Fountain Tire BC Street Stock Drivers Challenge at Western two weeks ago.  The next four positions are only separated by 16 points, Mike Derepentigny currently holds down fifth with 726 points, closely followed by Kevin Knight at 723, Rhett Smith 716 and Chris McInerney with 710.



The (OTRA) Old Time Racers Association will also be back in action, Nanaimo’s 64 year old Larry Joyce will be looking to make it two wins in a row, Joyce will have stiff competition from Tom Cinnamon, George Jenson, James Miller and the Dardengo brothers Jesse and Stephen.



Ike Amitage is the current Island Dwarf Car Club point’s leader and was also the winner of the last event at Western on August 11th.  Amitage can expect tough competition from former Modifed and Sprint Car Champion Dave Emmerson, Mike Schott, Bob Pridge and Bob Greenway all from Nanaimo as well as Campbell Rivers Mike and Jim Meeres.



The front gates will open at 4:30 pm, qualifying at 5:30 and racing at 6:30 pm.



The next event at Western Speedway will be Saturday September 15 as Demo Cars & Trucks, Bombers, Mini Figure 8’s will be in action along with a Total Destruction.
